How many plywood sheets do I need? Estimating for a real project
A quick formula, a worked example, and a wastage rule of thumb. For a precise cut plan, WhatsApp a specialist — but this gets you 90% of the way there.
The formula
Sheets needed = (Total area to cover ÷ Area per sheet) × (1 + wastage %)
A standard plywood sheet is 8 ft × 4 ft = 32 sq. ft.
A reasonable wastage allowance is 10% for straight-line cuts, 15% for angled or complex cuts, and 20% for very small parts where lots of drops go to scrap.
Worked example: a wardrobe
- Height 7 ft, width 6 ft, depth 2 ft = one 3-shutter wardrobe.
- Shutters + carcase + shelves + back panel ≈ 96 sq. ft. of plywood.
- 96 ÷ 32 = 3 sheets.
- + 10% wastage = 3.3, round up to 4 sheets.
Rules of thumb per project
| Project | Rough sheet count |
|---|---|
| 1 wardrobe (6 ft × 7 ft × 2 ft) | 3-4 |
| Kitchen carcases for a 12 ft L-shape | 8-10 |
| Living-room TV unit (medium) | 3-5 |
| Bedroom loft (6 ft × 3 ft) | 2 |
These are ballparks. The exact number depends on your cut layout, and a good carpenter can save you a sheet with a smart layout. The point of estimating is to know whether you are ordering 3 sheets or 30.
Get a real cut plan
Before your carpenter cuts anything, we can plan the cutting for you and confirm the exact sheet count — often lower than the formula because a specialist reads your drawings and reduces wastage. WhatsApp with the drawings (photos are fine) and a specialist will send back a cut plan and a quote.
Still not sure which is right for your project?
WhatsApp a photo of the room or the drawings — a specialist will call the grade before you buy.
